Role Description
The Survivors’ Compensation Advocacy Project is a national non-profit organisation providing legal support to victims of violent crime, with a particular focus on survivors of modern slavery, in pursuing compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
As a Volunteer Caseworker, you will play a direct role in supporting vulnerable individuals to access justice. You will assist in the preparation and progression of CICA applications, reviews, and appeals under supervision.
This role offers practical exposure to real casework, legal drafting, and client-focused advocacy in a high-impact area of law.
Key Responsibilities
Assisting in the preparation of CICA applications, including drafting application forms and supporting statements
Reviewing initial instructions and identifying relevant legal and evidential issues
Supporting the drafting of review submissions and, where appropriate, appeal documents
Analysing refusal decisions and identifying potential grounds of challenge
Assisting with evidence gathering, including medical, support worker, and contextual evidence
Maintaining accurate and organised case records
Communicating with supervising caseworkers and, where appropriate, partner organisations
Undertaking legal research on aspects of the CICA Scheme and relevant case law
Training and Support
Volunteers will receive structured training covering:
The CICA Scheme: eligibility, evidential requirements, and tariff framework
Application, review, and appeal processes
Drafting effective representations and submissions
Working with vulnerable clients and trauma-informed approaches
Ongoing supervision and feedback will be provided throughout.
Experience Required
Essential Criteria
Strong academic background in law
Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to draft clearly and precisely
Ability to analyse legal and factual material and identify relevant issues
High level of organisation and attention to detail
Commitment to access to justice and working with vulnerable individuals
Professionalism, reliability, and ability to meet deadlines
Ability to work independently and as part of a structured team
Preferred Criteria
Final-year (3rd year) LLB students or postgraduate law students (e.g. Bar Course / LPC / LLM)
Demonstrated interest in social welfare law, criminal law, or public law
Prior experience in legal volunteering, advice centres, or casework environments
Experience in legal drafting (e.g. opinions, submissions, or applications)
Interest in advocacy, litigation, or tribunal work
